What is Dia De Los Muertos?
Although many of us may be celebrating Halloween in October, this time of year has a very different meaning for some. From midnight on October 31st to the 2nd November people in Mexico, and people with Mexican heritage elsewhere in the world, come together to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away. Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is vibrant and colourful celebration of life and death; you may have seen ‘Sugar Skulls’ or Calaveras before. The brightly decorated skulls surrounded by marigolds are iconic. Calaveras have a lot of meaning during the holiday, edible ones are placed on top of altars (Ofrenda) as a symbol of remembrance alongside pictures of departed loved ones and their favorite food and drinks.
